Beginners Subgroup Meets prior to the first club meeting of each month (2nd Wednesday of each month 6pm) in the small room next to the main entrance to the hall where the main club meeting is held  at St Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Mt Gravatt.

MGPS  believes that new members and beginner photographers are the future and strength of our club.

Our beginners group aims:

to allow new members to get to know other club members within a small group

Learn how to use their cameras to a competent standard

Understand the terminology used when guest speakers come to present on various subjects

To feel comfortable and have support with each other or a club expert at outings.

Support members who would like to enter monthly competitions.

After attending the beginners sub group meetings, members will feel confident to continue in photography, entering competitions and enjoying the varied outings,  guest speakers, mentorships, MGPS offer.

No charge if participants are proceeding to enter the main club meeting. (Participants must be financial members of the main club to attend)

The meeting is open to all members,  not just members who have just joined. Come along whenever the topics of discussion appeal to you.

Digital Group - Rodney Topor

I’m a retired IT academic, who took up photography seriously before retirement as a hobby that combines technology and art.  I dabble in all kinds of photography, without excelling in any.  I like teaching so I’m happy to coordinate the digital group, which is an intermediate-level forum that aims to develop members’ photography, postprocessing and artistic skills.

The aim of the Digital Subgroup is to enable both new and experienced digital photographers to expand their knowledge and skills in digital photography and associated techniques through examples, demonstrations, tutorials and sharing of information.

The Digital subgroup meets on the fourth Monday of each month (except December) at the Garden City Library Meeting room at the Garden City Shopping Centre, Upper Mt Gravatt, Kessels and Logan Road (entrance off Macgregor Street near the Cinemas - UBD: D12 Page 201), rooms open at 7.00pm. Visitors are always welcome.

The agenda for the meetings include the following:

  • Showcase of images from our members
  • Members sharing their capture and processing techniques
  • Demonstrations of new software
  • Tutorials on use of software
  • Guest speakers
  • Audiovisual demonstrations and discussion
  • Group discussion
  • Digital photography news

Refreshments are available and a small donation to cover costs is appreciated.

Members are encouraged to submit up to 5 images for each meeting to  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. no later than the Friday preceding the meeting.  Please note the following information in the selection of images to submit:

  • The subject matter is open.
  • Each image should be at most 1400 pixels wide and at most 1050 pixels high.
  • Your name and image title on the image is optional.
  • The covering email must include your name so you can be given credit in the slide show.
