Beginners Group | Lighting Group | Digital Group | Monochrome Group | National / International Group
Beginners Subgroup Meets prior to the first club meeting of each month (2nd Wednesday of each month 6pm) in the small room next to the main entrance to the hall where the main club meeting is held at St Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Mt Gravatt.
MGPS believes that new members and beginner photographers are the future and strength of our club.
Our beginners group aims:
to allow new members to get to know other club members within a small group
Learn how to use their cameras to a competent standard
Understand the terminology used when guest speakers come to present on various subjects
To feel comfortable and have support with each other or a club expert at outings.
Support members who would like to enter monthly competitions.
The beginners sub group will follow this downloadable schedule each month covering the basics of photographic skills considered fundamental to a rich photographic journey which MGPS offers members.
After attending the beginners sub group meetings, members will feel confident to continue in photography, entering competitions and enjoying the varied outings, guest speakers, mentorships, MGPS offer.
Please contact Julie or Evelyn no later than 48hrs prior to meeting to confirm your attendance as space is limited.
No charge if participants are proceeding to enter the main club meeting. (Participants must be financial members of the main club to attend)
The meeting is open to all members, not just members who have just joined. Come along whenever the topics of discussion appeal to you.
What is the one thing all photographers use in common?
Is it a camera? Is it a lens? How about an editing suite?
Above all it is LIGHT. Many photographers only use natural light for their image making, this can limit their image making to usually only shooting during the day until this natural light fade and their exposure times become too long for the image they want.
What about still life, celebrations indoors, birthdays and parties and those projects you would like to undertake but find the lighting daunting? How do we overcome these obstacles?
The answer is SUPPLEMENTARY LIGHTING.
This can consist of On/Off Camera Flash, Studio Flash and Continuous Lighting with the use of soft boxes, umbrellas, diffusers, reflectors both positive and negative, transceivers and receivers etc,
The aim of the Lighting Subgroup is to help demystify these terms and how best to use these tools to light your project.
The group will attempt to be as hands-on as possible so that you will have practical experience to aid your learning.
The first meeting will be one where we go through the above to ensure that everyone is familiar with terms and equipment and what each does.
The next meeting, we will be making basic one light shot using your speedlight [I have some Canon ones for those who shoot Canon if you don't have your own to start with] and a shoot through umbrella. We will also experiment with bounce flash using the wall or ceiling and what the limitations are.
The venue is The Mt Gravatt Library at Garden City on the 3rd Monday of the month starting at 7.30 pm.
